Summaries: Predication of Maison Martin Margiela F/W2009
As the responses to the requirement of the project, I studied the past few years fashion show and analysis of Maison Martin Margiela (MMM). From the aspect of design, I found that MMM like to create different shape of shoulder pad. I am sure this is one special elements and symbol of MMM. Second, most design of MMM is very slim-cut. Many garments are made from light fabric and stick tightly on the human body. Thirdly, this brand likes to use stripe to design garments. Few seasons designs are features with stripe, for example, spring 2008 and 2009 also used. Fourthly, whatever the garments are a whole-in-one or a dress, the shape of the collar also very special, just like a sharp V-shape is very easy to see. Fifthly, MMM every year like to feature some special patterns, like Fall2008 and 2007 also features animal’s prints. Lastly, the designer always uses irregular shape on the clothes. It creates a three-dimensional silhouette to the cloths and gives peoples a special feeling when enjoying MMM designs. Therefore, my predication of MMM Fall 2009 also would follow these elements to design.
Then, it is time to analysis the color of MMM may would like to utilize in future.
As the result from our group project, we find that the main color of MMM is achromatic colors such as black, white, grey and beige. Thus, for the coming fall 2009, I believe that MMM would still use these color as same as his past seasons. Also, MMM is used to use high chromatic hues to present his garments. In the past, expect achromatic color, he also use shocking pink, yellow, red, blue and brown. The colors are mostly the same, but the values are totally different in different seasons. Besides, MMM is used to use the next color beside the complementary color. For example, in Spring2007, the brand is used red and blue. From the color wheel, red complementary color is green but the designer used blue which it is the color next to green. Another example is in fall 2007, the collection is used shocking pink and shocking yellow. From the color wheel, the opposite color of yellow is violet. Then, the color next to violet is pink. Thus, for my collection, I also will use this theory applied on my designs. Finally, I used achromatic color black (Pantone426C), white (Pantone7541C), beige (Pantone1345C), grey (Pantone Cool Grey 5C) and other two colors are Yellow green (Pantone330C) and violet (Pantone2617C).

In my collection, I designed five garments. Their silhouettes are based on my MMM design analysis. I totally painted 30 set of collection to try which color is more suitable. There are 150 pieces garments on hand. The first six set of garments, I demonstrate the plain family color on the clothes. Each seasons, MMM also would have some plain color garments. Thus, I also think that plain color garments must be included in the coming seasons.
Next, the following garments I try to match with different color to create different effect, like contrast, monochromatic and so on. I also try to add three colors together in one garment. By keep trying and trying, I develop some special patterns like grading color, messy prints and six colors matching. Eventually, I chose some of them as my final collection.
At the first garment which located at left hand side, I used black and violet. The proportion is 90% and 10% respectively. Most MMM designs use two colors in one garment, and use basic colors as the main color. Thus, I also use black as the main color. It can make contrast to violet and stand it out.
Then, the next garment is a blouse which has a slim cutting. I mixed six family colors together. Their proportion is equal. Although they are not analogous color but they still create some harmony effect. I also add some different angle of lighting on it. The final hue is look like a dispersing light mixed with different color.
Afterward, the third garments I applied the monochromatic theory on the garments. Black (50%), white (40%), grey (10%) is used on the garments. Black and white creates a big contrast. Then, grey color here is act as a neutralizer.
Besides, the fourth garments I used six family colors at the same time. It equally divided six colors in different location. It makes a symmetrical feeling on the garments.
Lastly, the last garment is used six family colors to create a mixed grading effect. I used stripe grading color as a pattern to decorate the garments. It surprisingly brings a special pattern in front of us.
For the above, it is my prediction of MMM FALL2009.
